Calling all time travelers, adventurers, and investigators, this mission is for you! Decipher and unearth Alabama's history through rocks, fossils, artifacts, and more. Embark to Tuscaloosa for the Uncover Alabama Camp Out with visits to the UA Arboretum, Alabama Museum of Natural History, Van de Graaff Arboretum & Historic Bridge Park, and Moundville Archaeological Park.
The weekend begins at the Spring Fling hosted by the UA
Arboretum and the Alabama Museum of Natural History. Expect to see
native wildflowers in full bloom and an exploration of science in
springtime. The Spring Fling located at the UA Arboretum will include
guided Nature Ramble walks starting every half hour led by experts
sharing their knowledge of the blooms, birds, amphibians, insects, and
other wildlife along the trails. Bring your sack lunch or stop for
take out in Tuscaloosa to enjoy within the scenic Arboretum. Be sure
to pack your blanket or lawn chair too for a place to dine in the
beautiful springtime garden.
After the Spring Fling, head to the Alabama Museum of Natural History for a journey back through time. The museum uncovers Alabama's history through remarkable exhibitions and specimen collections detailing the state's natural history and ancient past. Behold the 60 ft skeleton of an ancient toothed whale called Basilosaurus cetoides lurking overhead hanging from the ceiling. Examine rocks and minerals from around the world and exhibits with countless more to be found.
Next venture on campus to meet and greet with the students of the UA Undergraduate Historical Society. The UHS students and professors will facilitate programming about their experience as students, different career paths, and of course more of Alabama's fascinating history. Ask questions and investigate archaeology, anthropology, paleontology, and more.
Closing out the day, settle down and set up your campsite at Van de
Graaff Arboretum & Historic Bridge Park. The campground tent site
includes a grill, picnic tables, and a bathroom facility. Dinner will
be provided so you can rest easy getting comfortable and exploring the
park amenities. Finish the night with an evening activity around the
campfire under a starry sky.
Sunday morning wake up and clean
up camp to caravan for the finale of the weekend, Moundville
Archaeological Park. Pack your own breakfast supplies or pit stop on
the road to eat before arriving at the park. Moundville Archaeological
Park was once the site of a powerful prehistoric community that, at
its peak, was America's largest city. Unearth it's hidden stories and
rich culture with a tour and special programming led by park staff.
Girl Scouts will have hands-on opportunities with ancient tools, such
as an atlatl used in traditional hunting practices. After the
programming and tour concludes, depart home with the added wisdom of
Alabama's development through history to the modern age.

Girl Scout registration also includes a custom fun patch and GeoAlabama Bandana with quick guide pamphlet. Participants will be responsible for Saturday lunch, all tent camping equipment, transportation between activity locations, and maintaining the proper Adult Volunteer-to-Youth Ratios per the Safety Activity Checkpoints. Please ensure that a designated adult attends to chaperone and transport your Girl Scout or Troop. A packing list and schedule will be sent out prior to the event. Adults must be 19+ to attend with a girl.
