Events: March 2010 Archives

We hope you were able to make it to our Annual Meeting in Daphne last weekend.  It was a fun day, and a special time for sharing the great ideas our volunteers have.   And how could you resist those adorable "Dancing Daisies" from Troop 8287?! They were too cute!

Just in case you weren't able to join us, here's a quick snapshot of the day's events.  Troop 8202 started the meeting with a flag ceremony, and a special fashion show, led by council archivist Gigi Barroco.  A special presentation by Laurel Ritchie, senior vice president and chief marketing officer for GSUSA, share the highlights of Girl Scouts new brand campaign, which will debut nationally in July. Volunteers also attended their choice of two volunteer forums, which were designed to allow them time to share stories and ideas.  The forums centered around how to run your troop efficiently and effectively.

After lunch, Helen Alford, 1st vice chair of the board, presented special council scholarships and awards. Jessica L. was awarded the Ellen Autrey Anderson Gold Award Scholarship, and Abigail B. was presented the Loucretia Hollingsworth Scholarship and the Blanchard-Hinton Lifetime Scholarship.

After the awards presentation, Board Chair Ellen Brooks called the business meeting to order.  After stewardship reports from the board and CEO, the delegates unanimously voted to approve the following board members: Ramona Blankenship, Pedro Mandoki, Liz Braswell, Nancy Greenwood, Jason Bryant, Carlos Gant, Marian Loftin and Larry Turner, Ed.D.

The meeting ended with a discussion of the council's vision for the 2010-2011 year by incoming board chair Helen Alford.

03252010_WoD.JPGGirl Scouts of Southern Alabama hosted its 15th Annual Women of Distinction Awards Gala and Auction March 25, 2010 at Wynlakes Golf and Country Club.  Over 200 attendees helped celebrate the honorees accomplishments and commitments to their community.  We've posted our photo gallery of the event, and will have video from the event, also.

Honorees included Margaret Hastings Bentley, Wanda Lloyd, Judge Sharon Gilbert Yates, Bette Sue Strasburger, Karen Sellers, Sheron Rose and Edith Jordan Wilcox. Young Women of Distinction honorees included Abigail B. and Miranda S.  Girl Scout Volunteer of the Year Award was presented to Liz Carnahan. These women, through service to their family, career and community have set an example of excellence and Girl Scouts of Southern Alabama is proud to recognize them.

Highlights from the evening included a reception and silent auction before the awards dinner.  The program began with special guest speaker, The Honorable Sue Bell Cobb, Chief Justice, Alabama Supreme Court, who delivered the keynote address.  The mistress of ceremonies was WSFA-12 news anchor Tonya Terry.  The fabulous evening also included a live auction conducted by Auctioneer Johnny Mullins.

Proceeds from this event will help Girl Scouts of Southern Alabama make leadership development programs available to every girl, everywhere.

Special thanks to all of our sponsors and volunteers who helped make the night a success!

Earth Day is April 22, and we have a program April 17 that is all about the outdoors!  Daisy and Brownie Girl Scouts can attend at Camp Scoutshire Woods or Kamp Kiwanis.

March 12, 2010 commemorates the 98th  birthday of Girl Scouting.  It was that day in 1912 when Juliette Gordon Low formed the first Girl Scout troop of 18 girls. For years, Girl Scouts around the globe have been serving others.  During this week, some honor Girl Scouting by indulging in their favorite cookies, while others are inspired by the classic trefoil and its historical background.

HGTV's blog takes a look at how the trefoil has been used in architecture throughout history.  SunTrust tower in Tampa, Fla. lit up its tower with a green light for Girl Scout week.

Wherever you are and whatever you do this Girl Scout week, be sure to show your appreciation!

Well, the weather could have been better for the Thin Mint Sprint ... OK, it could have been a LOT better!  Although it was cold and rainy, we still had a great turnout and a great time.  We were so thankful for all the people who braved the chilly weather to support Girl Scouts and a healthy lifestyle.

We had over 300 runners registered for the 5K and more than 100 registered for the fun run. The kids had a great time at all the activities at the Healthy Family Fun Fair following the Sprint.

There are commemorative 2010 Thin Mint Sprint T-shirts for sale in the Mobile council shop.  There aren't many left and are selling for $5 per shirt -- what a steal!

Check out our photo album and video from the event.
