Community Service: September 2009 Archives

United Way of Southwest Alabama chose to feature Girl Scouts in their annual kick-off because Girl Scouts are role models of volunteering! Girls of Troop 8369 are shown talking about recent projects in this video (about 2/3 of the way through). Way to go, Troop 8369!

Walk with Me

Take a Step to Help People with Disabilities

Goodwill Easter Seals is hosting a family fun walk October 3, and they would like Girl Scouts to participate.  Girl Scouts are invited to host a booth with information to promote Girl Scouts, and to be cheerleaders.  There is also a troop doing the opening flag ceremony.  If your troop is interested in participating, call Mary Anne at extension 1202.  This will be a great opportunity to promote scouting and to show that we work together to help each other make our community a better place.

Schedule: 8:00 a.m. check in; 9:00 a.m. start time
Date: October 3, 2009
Location: Langan Park in Mobile
Course Route: 1.2 mile Family Fun Walk

It's a fact that the more children read, the better they do in school.

United Way of Southwest Alabama recognizes the value of helping our local elementary school students prepare for a successful future. After all, they are tomorrow's workforce.

So United Way is challenging companies and individuals to participate in their Live United thru Reading book drive. Now through December, United Way will be collecting new books for first graders in the Mobile County Public School System. Books collected will be handed out on the 100th day of school.

Books can be dropped off at the GSSA Mobile service center between 8:30 - 4:30, Monday - Friday.   Put books in the hands of local children and improve their early reading skills. Make a long-lasting, positive impact on their lives for years to come.

Our council shops will be closed for annual inventory September 28-30.  Volunteers are needed to help with inventory, so if you can assist, please let Pam (extension 1902) in Mobile, or Brittney (extension 2602) in Montgomery know.

Also, because cookie gift certificates & Viva cards will expire September 30 while the shops are closed, we are extending the deadline until October 3.   The shop will be open October 3, for the Saturday Shop, so you can use your gift certificate or Viva card then!

sonia.jpgHi, my name is Kayleigh S.  I'm an Ambassador Girl Scout with Troop 8493. I am asking for support from my fellow Girl Scouts to help me in a service project, called Nurses, Infants, Community United (NICU). This program supports The Children's Miracle Network, that helps preemie babies, and helps soothe the troubled times for the babies' families. I am asking the Girl Scouts because I know that the girls have loving and caring hearts and would love to help the babies and their caregivers for our local hospitals.

Your donations would brighten their days. The babies are not able to visit their mothers so much, so the nurses love to take pictures and print them out and give it to the worried mothers. The babies also listen to nice relaxing music to help them sleep.  They often have to change the babies' blankets and they tend to run out of fresh ones in one day's time.  They use expo markers to constantly update the boards with the babies' info for the parents and loved ones.

Some of the items needed are: new digital cameras, blankets, CD players and relaxing CD's, photo paper, and expo markers.

Your support is greatly appreciated!!  We will be taking donations through November 15, 2009.  Please set up a box within your troop and items collected can be dropped off by your leaders at your local Girl Scout office.

If you have any questions e-mail me at: kkaycat321@yahoo.com

Thanks again,

Kayleigh

GO GIRL SCOUTS!!

If your girls have made a difference by volunteering in their community over the past year, they could win $1,000 and a fabulous trip to Washington, D.C., by applying for a Prudential Spirit of Community Award! Even more important, they could win recognition that might inspire other young people to follow their example. These prestigious awards, sponsored by Prudential Financial and the National Association of Secondary School Principals, have honored tens of thousands of middle level and high school students over the past 14 years solely for their volunteer work.

Applications for the 2010 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program will be accepted from until November 2, 2009. To apply online, click here. To request a paper application, call 1-877-525-8491 toll-free.
