The purpose of this course is to provide the information and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to small craft and aquatic emergencies using non-swimming rescues. This training is required to take Girl Scouts canoeing on lakes. Skill requirements: Be able to swim 25 yards, tread water for one minute without a life jacket, and demonstrate basic canoeing skills including: launching, boarding, paddling forward and backward, stopping, turning and straight line solo paddling. Participants will also be capsizing and re-entering a canoe from deep water.

Either way, attending this training provides you as a leader or parent with the opportunity to know what to expect if your troop or daughter decides to pursue an award. Don’t get started without knowing all the details! Girls will have separate trainings to find out what it takes to walk away with the highest awards in Girl Scouting.

Special note: Many American Red Cross chapters will be offering Blended Learning (Online) courses, which will allow you to complete the course online, then meet with an instructor at a desinated
time to demonstrate your skills. Fees and schedules for skills portion vary. Check with your local Red Cross chapter.

Intro to Canoe covers the following: the parts of a canoe, the universal signals, board, launch, land, & paddle forward/backward, and turn (solo), correct posture and position in a canoe, effective communication with other canoeists and tying a painter. Special emphasis will be placed on learning paddling strokes to keep the craft trim while solo and tandem canoeing.
