Camp Sunshine 2008:
Twenty Summers and Counting...

How can people make the world a better place? One significant way is by participating in, or contributing to, an annual week-long, day camp for girls ages six through 12. For 20 years Camp Sunshine has been doing just that - making the world a better place.

After Laurie Weil and Kathy Sawyer met while participating in Leadership Montgomery, their friendship led to the revival of Camp Sunshine in 1989. Working with the Girl Scouts of Southern Alabama, Inc., which handles recruitment and registration, the camp has offered opportunities to young girls for 20 consecutive summers.

All of the different components of the camp (volunteers, donors, and campers) have been making the world a better place by preparing these campers to become responsible citizens of their community.

Activities seek to interpret the Girl Scout Promise and Law, which lead everyone to act honorably, pursue excellence, show respect for others, live in harmony and respect nature. As Laurie Weil said at orientation, "If everyone could go to camp, the world would be a better place."

This explains the focus of our planning as we move towards a new Girl Scout Leadership Experience.

The Leader Notebook
is a new document that contains great information for new and returning leaders. It has ideas for encouraging parent involvement, sample meeting outlines, and the step by step process of establishing a troop. It's a great refresher for experienced leaders, too!
