The crackle of the campfire, the splash of canoe paddles in the lake, the whoosh of an arrow flying towards the bullseye—these are the sounds of a beloved summer tradition: Girl Scout camp. Girl Scouts of Southern Alabama (GSSA) is pleased to announce that summer camp kicks off on Sunday, June 11. Girls have a variety of camps from which to choose including both day and overnight camp options. New this year, our Red-Cross certified instructors will be teaching swimming lessons!
Our resident and day camp properties, Camp Scoutshire Woods in Citronelle and Kamp Kiwanis on Lake Martin, are the perfect places for your Girl Scout to spend the summer. Each property is special in its own way, and we can’t wait for girls to experience them. Kamp Kiwanis is perfect for water bugs, with its gorgeous lake and ample opportunities for girls to participate in all kinds of water activities (sailing, anyone?). Camp Scoutshire Woods will be her home away from home as she rides the trails, enjoying the beauty of the wild magnolias and pitcher plants. This summer, our programming, which includes Girl Scout badge work, has a fun Dr. Seuss theme, which we know the girls will enjoy.
Not only do girls have fun and create lifelong memories at camp, but the Girl Scout Research Institute (GSRI) found that outdoor experiences help girls develop news skills, build confidence, and improve problem-solving skills. In an age in which it is easy for kids to stay glued to tablets and smartphones, camp provides girls a critical opportunity to unplug and connect with nature, themselves, and their peers.
