A question we have heard recently is “What’s the scoop on the Savannah Smiles cookies?”

Here’s the answer: Girl Scout councils all over the nation get their cookies (and cookie incentive programs) from one of two baking companies. Why are there two companies? To ensure the best quality and lowest prices through competition – these companies have to compete for each council’s business.

We choose which baking company based on not only their cookies, but by how they treat our girls – are the incentives desirable and delivered on time? Do they fulfill all aspects of their contract with the council?

Both baking companies make our most famous cookie, the Thin Mint. They also both make a Coconut/Caramel/Chocolate cookie, Peanut Butter Sandwich, a Peanut Butter Patty, and a Shortbread cookie. From there, the two companies produce different cookies that they believe will appeal to customers.

In addition to the long-time favorites mentioned above, our baking company makes Thanks-A-Lots, Shout-Outs, and the delicious Lemonade cookies.

Lemonades are the best selling Lemon cookie in the history of Girl Scouting and we are confident they will continue to be extremely popular! We chose to highlight the Shortbread cookie in this 100th anniversary year– it was the cookie that started it all, and we feel that highlighting it pays a fitting tribute to an organization so rich in history. The packaging has the 100th logo and the retro and modern pictures to signify this historic anniversary.

Savannah Smiles are made by the other baking company – they aren’t sold in our council, because we use the baker that we believe best serves our Girl Scouts. We know a few people will be disappointed, but as we like to say “When life gives you lemons, try a Girl Scout Lemonade Cookie! It will definitely put a smile on your face!”
