Anti-Bullying Patch

For: Girl Scout Brownies, Juniors, Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors

Objective: To develop an understanding of the different types of bullying, how to prevent bullying and how to build a safe environment. To build self-respect and confidence to help girls overcome a bullying situation.

Guidelines: Brownies and Juniors will complete one activity from each session. Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors will complete two activities from each session, one of these must include the starred (*) activities.

Cost: $2.00 per patch

It's not too late to register to "Adopt A Distinguished Young Woman" for this year. Formerly known as Adopt an America's Junior Miss, this program allows Girl Scout troops to interact with contestants over the time that they are in Mobile for the national finals, June 12-25.

At this point, we still have 19 out of the 50 girls without troops. We want this to be a great experience for all of the girls. We've extended the deadline (again) until May 20, 2011.

Check out the Be Your Best Self patch program. If your troop completes the patch program by June 12, your troop will be recognized in a special ceremony at one of the events.

Be sure when you turn in your Event Registration Form to list which states you would like to adopt. Keep in mind, 31 of the states have already been assigned. The young women who are coming are really impressive! See what great role models your girls can interact with if you participate in this program.

Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. are celebrating 100 years!  Volunteer Gigi B. developed this excellent patch program to help girls celebrate and to develop an appreciation of how their council became what it is today. This patch may be earned from March 2011 through December 2012. To encourage all girls to participate, websites and other resources are provided in the patch program document.

The patch requirements fall under three categories: Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. history; Girl Scouts of Southern Alabama history; and Girl Scout history-related service project. 

A patch that will go with the council's souvenir celebration patch will be available only to girls and adults completing this patch program, so plan for your girls to earn this special patch!

We're so excited about the 3rd annual Thin Mint Sprint, and things just keep getting even better! 

We've already got:

• the new patch program (the deadline to register for the patch program is tomorrow, February 18!)
• you can recycle old tennis shoes, thanks to Baldwin Bone and Joint, P.C.
• Azalea City DJ's Step Daddy will be there to entertain
• troops will be leading crafts, selling cookies, and being Thin Mint cheerleaders
• various health screenings and safety activities led by city personnel
• The troop with the most race entries will win a troop award
  

And now, to top it all off, the Museum of Art is having a family friendly Mardi Gras event.  In case you're not familiar with the area, the museum is in Langan Park, where the Thin Mint Sprint is held.  So, after the health expo/awards ceremony is over, you can walk on over to even more (and FREE) fun!

The event will include Mardi Gras inspired art activities, ballroom dancing, music, refreshments, Mardi Gras inspired short plays, and more.

This is really shaping up to be a great day at Langan Park.  Will you be there?

We're so excited about the new Thin Mint Sprint patch program, we uploaded it to the website as quick as we could.  In the process, we may have forgotten to include the nifty training log for the Marathon and 5K patches. (Whoopsies!)  Thankfully, we have great volunteers to keep us straight.  Here's the Thin Mint Sprint patch program info... with the training log included this time.

It's time for the annual Cans for Cash™ City Recycling Challenge!

This national recycling competition runs from October 1 - October 31. All you have to do is save and recycle your aluminum cans to help your city win! A total of $70,000 in prize money can be won in categories ranging from Most Cans Collected to Most Innovative Ideas, as well as the American Video Recycler Award.

Get your girls together and grab up some cans!  This is the perfect opportunity to teach your Girl Scout troop about the benefits of recycling and how it conserves our natural resources. You could get the Recycling Rocks fun patch, too! Help girls collect used cans from family and friends to donate to your city while educating them on global sustainability efforts.

The cities in our council participating are: Montgomery, Mobile and Daphne.

Register ON TIME for the 2010-2011 membership year!  As you know, the Girl Scout year is from October 1, to September 30.  Keep your returning girls involved in Girl Scouts by not allowing their membership to lapse.   Plus, any new girls who are registering for the first time will get the On Time Patch as their first patch!

You may order the FREE On Time patches for all girls registered on or before September 30, 2010, with the exception of any girls who registered early and have already received the Early Bird Patch.  Patches will be ordered for the number of girls indicated below plus up to TWO additional patches for adult leadership. 

This form must accompany your troop registrations when they are submitted to the council.

Participate in BOTH World Water Monitoring Day and National Public Lands Day and get a FREE Test Kit

World Water Monitoring Day (WWMD) will once again be offering free water monitoring kits to Girl Scouts if they register for both WWMD and National Public Lands Day (NPLD).  There was great participation from Girl Scouts last year and WWMD is excited to see what this year brings. 

To receive a free kit, troops must register with WWMD and indicate that they are affiliated with NPLD, or register with NPLD and indicate that they are affiliated with WWMD (registration is free through both programs).  Participation in the WWMD program can help Girl Scouts earn credit toward the Get With the Land or Water Drop patches.  Kits will be shipped between now and September as long as supplies last. Please contact wwmd@wef.org with questions.

There are lots of great programs in the patch book, but the Summer Fun one is well... fun for the summer!  Your troop just has to plan at least one outdoor activity per month in June, July and August. At least one of these activities should include your girls' families, and all of the activities should heighten your troop's appreciation of the outdoors.

The Girl Scouts Global Action patch, developed in partnership with the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS), is an exciting and enriching way for Girl Scout Daisies to Ambassadors to participate in realizing the United Nations' Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) which aim to reduce extreme poverty and impact major world concerns by 2015.

 

The alliance between WAGGGS and the United Nations' Millennium Development Goals embraces WAGGGS's mission of empowering girls and young women to develop to their fullest potential as engaged and responsible global citizens. Around the world there are 145 WAGGGS member organizations, of which GSUSA is one, serving girls and young women in wide-ranging "Scouting" endeavors.

 

By earning the Global Action patch, girls can learn, in a fun and educational way, about serious global issues affecting girls, young women, and their communities.  Participation activities for Daisies to Ambassadors are online, and the patch will be available at Girl Scouts shops in the next few weeks.

We introduced the Pink Princesses Patch Program November 4.  This patch program was developed by a high school girl in Baldwin county.  She feels very passionate about teaching girls to stand up for their beliefs, and work on ways to resist pressure to behave in ways that contradict their beliefs or violate their individuality.   The program encourages girls to model their good character and independence for all to see!  I think we can all agree our girls can benefit from those lessons.

 

Thanks to a Girl Scout supporter, we are able to offer the first 200 girls that complete this program a free patch!  If you need to have the patches mailed, you will need to pay for shipping charges.

Girl Scouts of the Florida Panhandle have a patch program for Brownies, the Naval Aviation try-it, to share with our council. Naval Aviation plays an important role in the Gulf Coast community, and Girl Scouts should learn about what goes on around their community. While earning this patch your girls will learn about Naval Aviation and Women's important contribution to Naval Aviation. All of the requirements for this try-it are very fun and a day trip to visit the Pensacola Naval Air Museum would fulfill most of them. To earn this try-it, you must complete four of the activities. The Center For Community Advancement is hosting an annual spotlight event, American Indian History Month Festival, in celebration of American Indian History Month. There will be interactive opportunities to participate in the dance circle and newly custom stitched patches for Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. The custom stitching is an original design, which features the event name and logo. The cost is $3 per patch and can be purchased at the event sign in table through Girl Scout Troop Leader 9801.

 

The 2009 festival includes introduction of participating tribal Chiefs, gourd dancing, Grand Entry, a northern & southern drum, flute music, stomp dancing, competitive and non-competitive dance divisions, historical tribal exhibits, storytelling and lots of great door prizes.

Girl Scouts of Southern Alabama is pleased to announce a new patch program, Pink Princesses, created by a Girl Scout in Baldwin County.

The objective of the Pink Princesses Patch Program is to teach girls awareness, pride and confidence in the qualities that make them a unique individual.  It encourages them to stand up for their beliefs, and works on ways to resist pressure to behave in ways that contradict their beliefs or violate their individuality.  The program encourages them to model their good character and independence for all to see!

A special component of this patch program is an opportunity to have the Pink Princesses come to your troop meeting to perform the skit, Staying True Never Goes Out of Style.

Each year, an increasing number of families across America struggle to find living wage jobs, and as a result more and more families find themselves experiencing episodic or chronic homelessness.  Children are most acutely impacted by this experience.

A patch program, called "A Heart for the Homeless" teaches girls about the issues facing homeless families in their communities.  The children explore ideas as to how they can help families and kids in need.

In the past 3 years, nearly 300 Girl Scout troops and over 3,100 girls from New York to Hawaii earned the patch.  Click here to learn about all the details of "A Heart for the Homeless" patch program.

The Conde Charlotte Museum in Mobile offers "American I Spy" programs for Girl Scout Brownies and Juniors. Girls take an "I Spy" journey through the Conde Charlotte Museum, learn about the history of the American flag and proper respect for it, and make a badge related craft project. Girls will earn the "America the Beautiful" patch while participating in the program. Fee of $10 per girl includes patch, activities and snack. Do you know what to do in an emergency situation? The Girl Scout Council of the Nation's Capital, in partnership with FEMA's Citizen Corps, presented the brand-new Emergency Preparedness Patch Program, designed to equip Girl Scouts with skills to protect their families, friends and communities when disaster strikes. The Emergency Preparedness Patch program prepares Girl Scouts to:

• Identify local risks and potential emergencies
• Connect with local community service agencies
• Learn local alerts and warning systems
• Prepare themselves and their family

The History of Girls Scouts and Preparedness

Encouraging girls to take preventive steps and actions toward being safe has always been a priority for the Girl Scout movement. "Be Prepared" is our organization's motto, and as far back as the 1917 edition of the Handbook for Girl Scouts, girls were asked to write articles to share information about the spread of insect-borne diseases, learn how to use a fire alarm and be knowledgeable on other topics of public health and safety.

The U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville has announced their Scout Days for the spring and fall.  You might want to try this out with your troop - it looks like a lot of fun!
