The purpose of this course is to provide the information and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to small craft and aquatic emergencies using non-swimming rescues. This training is required to take Girl Scouts canoeing on lakes.

Skill requirements: Be able to swim 25 yards, tread water for one minute without a life jacket, and demonstrate basic canoeing skills including: launching, boarding, paddling forward and backward, stopping, turning and straight line solo paddling. Participants will also be capsizing and re-entering a canoe from deep water.

The Alabama Hiking Trail Society will be holding demonstrations in dutch oven cooking, compass skills, gear packing and more at their Annual Conference, to be held at Mobile's 5 Rivers Delta Resource Center on March 6-7.
