Some of the most memorable moments in a Girl Scout's life happen while attending special events and taking trips. However, there are requirements and forms to complete before you can be on your way.

All trips require adherence to Safety-Wise and GSSA Policies and Procedures found in Volunteer Essentials, especially with regards to permission slips.  Permission slips and health history forms must be completed and available to responsible parties for the duration of the trip. All the necessary forms can be found on the Forms and Resources page at www.girlscoutssa.org.

Troops planning any overnight trip must receive permission from Girl Scouts of Southern Alabama. The Overnight Trip/Camping Application is also available on our Forms and Resources page at www.girlscoutssa.org.  This form must be completed and forwarded to Cheryl Miller at cmiller@girlscoutssa.org two to four weeks (depending on the length of trip) prior for approval.  Cheryl is also available to answer any questions you may have regarding troop trips.

Trips lasting three or more nights, (not including a federal holiday) require the troop to purchase additional GSUSA insurance from the council.

More information about planning and taking trips with your girls is available in Volunteer Essentials.

The registration window for February - July programs opens December 15.  We already have some great programs planned and are adding new ones often.  In fact, we just added four today!  These are really cool programs that will fill up quickly, so even though it's hard to focus with the holidays upon us you might want to take a few minutes to check these out.

Last year nearly 200 Girl Scouts from southern Alabama attended Wicked in Birmingham and raved about it.  Now, we want to offer this opportunity to those that missed out on it. Broadway Across America will present Wicked at the new Mahalia Jackson Theatre in New Orleans, and Girl Scouts of Southern Alabama will attend the matinee Saturday, April 3, 2010, at 2 p.m. We realize that this is Easter weekend; however, we have Girl Scout program conflicts the other matinee weekends.

Winner of three Tonys, Wicked is the story of the witches of Oz before Dorothy arrived in Munchkinland. The play is appropriate for ages 8 and up, but is enjoyed by all ages on different levels.

Girl Scouts of Southern Alabama hosted its 14th Annual Women of Distinction Awards Gala on March 10, 2009 at Arrowhead Country Club.  Over 150 attendees helped celebrate the honorees accomplishments and commitments to their community.

Honorees included Elizabeth Braswell, Tamara Cofield, Dr. Susan Diamond, Dee Gambill, Sue Herring Groce, Joy Grodnick, Dora James, Juanita Owes, Nancy Raia, Sarah Spear, Lisa Stephens and Virginia Thompson.  Young Women of Distinction honorees included Barbara B., Maria B., Haley E. and Leah N.  Girl Scout Volunteer of the Year Award was presented to Yvonne Lee.

Highlights from the evening included a reception and silent auction before the awards dinner.  Ellen Brooks, board chair and longtime Girl Scout delivered the keynote address.  The mistress of ceremonies was WSFA-12 news anchor Tonya Terry.  The fabulous evening also included a live auction conducted by Auctioneer Johnny Mullins.

Proceeds from the event support our Girl Leadership Development Program and provide financial assistance for girls who would not normally have the opportunity to participate.

Special thanks to all our sponsors and volunteers who helped make the night a success!  See our special events page to view all the sponsors and the committee members who put on this wonderful event.

hyundai.jpgRemember watching Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood?  My favorite part was the factory tours: from crayon manufacture to a bread-making production line, I love a tour!

Hyundai Motors in Montgomery offers group tours!  What a great way for our girls to learn about manufacturing and Alabama industry.

Tour info is found at www.hmmausa.com; tours are offered on Monday, Wednesday, & Friday during the day and Thursday evening.  Ages are 3rd grade and up.   Reservations are required, call 334 387-8019 for more information.

Back to Mr. Rogers.  Did you notice that he NEVER put his lace-up shoes back on at the end of the show?  That always concerned me.

Girls have a great time at our yearly Cookie Celebrations!  And this year's empowering theme of "Imagine If...We Could Change The World"  creates an opportunity for a fabulous Celebration.

The Cookie Imagination Celebration is just the event to kick off the cookie sale and get your girls excited about the changes they can make to help the world be a better place!

Girls will make switch plates as reminders to turn out the lights, participate in cookie relays and use their imaginations on how to make the world a better place.

The date and location are Sat, Jan 10 morning at the Rachel Patterson Elementary School in Atmore.  See the program calendar or call Mary Anne Brutkiewicz at 251-344-3330 for more information!

Admission to "Salute to Girl Scouts Weekend" is $31.50 per person plus tax and includes activities from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and lunch plus a second day of admission to explore Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex.  For more information or to register please call (321) 449-4400 or visit www.KennedySpaceCenter.com.

mobileintlfestival-ps.jpgOne of our many Council patches centers around the Mobile International Festival, being held on Nov. 22.  Girl Scouts attending the festival can earn many of the requirements for the International Friendship Patch available on our council's website. Girls advance diversity in a multicultural world by learning to appreciate the international cultures represented at the festival.  They also have a GREAT time watching dances, eating food and seeing craft demonstrations from around the world!

You can order tickets using this form: http://mobileinternationalfestival.org/MIF/scouts/08girlscoutorderform.doc

Is there an activity or historical site near you that is "patch-worthy"?  We welcome leaders to develop patches that focus on the rich history and diversity of our area.  Contact Mary Anne Brutkiewicz (mbrutkiewicz@girlscoutssa.org) at 251-344-3330 more information on creating patches.
