It's not too late to register to "Adopt A Distinguished Young Woman" for this year. Formerly known as Adopt an America's Junior Miss, this program allows Girl Scout troops to interact with contestants at 4 events over the time that they are in Mobile for the national finals, June 17-27.

We've all been focused on 100th Anniversary events, but this annual event, unique to Mobile, is one of the highlights of the GSSA girl scout calendar. It is so rewarding for our girls to meet high-achieving young women whose ambitions and dreams can inspire them to  dream big for their own lives!    See what great role models  your girls can interact with if you participate in this program.

Check out the Be Your Best Self patch program. If your troop completes the patch program by June 12, your troop will be recognized in a special ceremony at one of the events.

Be sure when you turn in your Event Registration Form to list which states you would like to adopt.  The young women who are coming are really impressive!

liz_brent.jpgWe were at the Capitol Hill Golf Course in Montgomery Tuesday, May 24, working on a great partnership with the LPGA golf tournament there for our girls and volunteers.   In September during the tournament, we will have girls who are standard bearers with each golfer.   What a great opportunity to be up close to the action and see it first-hand.  It's also a fun way to interact with a professional golfer and get involved in the tournament.  There will also be volunteer opportunities for parents as adult volunteers.   We are excited that Girl Scouts of all ages will be able to get involved in this special partnership.

Summer is a bit of a down time for Girl Scout troops, but we are working to make sure opportunities for Girl Scout fun are available year round. As many of you know, we run two resident camps during the summer, for which we spend a lot of time working to make certain the girls who attend have a great time.   Of course, not everyone can make resident camp, though.

This summer our staff membership, volunteer and program team (MVP) group is working to have other activities for the girls.   Some are programs we have had each year, like the opportunity to host or attend America's Junior Miss (now Distinguished Young Women) events in Mobile.   Those programs are all planned and ready for girls to have a great time getting to know accomplished young women.   A Mobile area service unit offers a day camp at the Mobile Botanical Gardens.   In the northern part of the council, we will offer a Science Day in Troy, Family Fishing and Fun Day at Camp Humming Hills in Elba and a Christmas in July activity in Montgomery, just to name a few. Keep an eye on the programs and events tab on the council website for all the fun we have planned to make your summer a great one! And look for new program events for fall coming soon!

At this point, we still have 19 out of the 50 girls without troops. We want this to be a great experience for all of the girls. We've extended the deadline (again) until May 20, 2011.

If your troop can host, please contact Jeannie Napper at 251-344-3330, ext. 1202.

Be sure when you turn in your Event Registration Form to list which states you would like to adopt. Keep in mind, 31 of the states have already been assigned. Still aren't sold? Look at the photos from last year's program, and we're sure you'll adopt a Distinguished Young Woman!

Troops are still needed as we are far from our goal of 50 troops. If you are interested, please send an Event Registration Form to Mary Anne Brutkiewicz by May 1. Be sure and include your state preferences, if any.
