Press Rep Mikayla Shares Her Bronze Award Experience

Hi, my name is Mikayla and I have been a Girl Scout for 3 years.  I'm a second year Junior in Troop 8056, in Mobile.  We are a very active troop.

We go on exciting adventures to new places and get to meet a lot of new people. I get to see things I would not have seen if it wasn't for Girl Scouts.  Last year, I earned my bronze award.

I earned my bronze award by collecting clothes, toys, old cell phones, and even donating cookies to the Penelope House.  Just in case you are wondering, I collected old cell phones so someone could fix them and be able to call 911 when they were in trouble.  I also did chores around my house to earn money for them.  The Penelope House is a safe haven for women and children who are being abused and need to get away to a safe place.  The most important thing I learned from this was that not everyone has the life they want, even though they deserve it.  And that is how I earned my bronze award

Press Rep Susan Reports on the Montgomery 100th Anniversary Celebration

My name is Susan and I'm a Cadette in Troop 9204. On Saturday, October 29, 2011, the Girl Scouts of Southern Alabama gathered in Montgomery in order to celebrate the centennial of Girl Scouting. Many activities were offered including games, contests, crafts, and dancing. There were also opportunities to learn about our council, service units, and Girl Scouting in general.

While there, I enjoyed making a bracelet, learning about the history of Girl Scouting, and designing a new uniform for future scouts. Others in my troop made sand art, hoola-hooped, and wove baskets. As part of the celebration, my service unit went up on the stage and sang many camp songs. Other troops also sang or had tables for different activities.

     In order to earn the "Discovering our 100-Year-History" badge, I had to do five different activities. The number of activities required varied for different age groups. Daisies and Brownies had to do four; Juniors and Cadettes had to do five; and Seniors and Ambassadors had to do six. 

Other organizations attended in order to help celebrate this important year for Girl Scouts. Many people enjoyed petting dogs from The Montgomery Humane Society. Others enjoyed feeling the many pelts from the Alabama Wildlife Federation. I saw a lot of people looking at the Montgomery Fire Department's truck.

A Brownie Press Rep's View on the 100th Anniversary Celebration

Hi! I'm Tori and I'm a Brownie. Guess what? For the 100th year of Girl Scouts, I got the chance to go to the Museum of Art in Mobile. There were lots of girls! We watched a movie called "Juliette Gordon Lowe's Life." It was so cool and I learned a lot about our founder. Did you know she was deaf? She became deaf from rice getting in her ear. Back then, people would throw rice for good luck on their wedding day. Some rice got stuck in her ear and when she had surgery to get it removed, it made a hole in her eardrum and she was deaf. She said "Just because I am deaf, I will not let it stop me." My daddy is deaf and nothing stops him either!

Juliette Gordon Low founded the Girl Scouts! She died from breast cancer and she was buried in her Girl Scout uniform. She loved Girl Scouts! Her birthday is October 31st, so we celebrated by singing happy birthday to her and eating cupcakes. It was so fun!

We made paintings of birds and got to hear a famous mayor speak to us. We also walked across a big, long bridge to get to the new century. We had a great time and got to make lots of new friends and learn new songs. I will never forget the fun time I had today! Happy Birthday Juliette Gordon Low!
